Davidson Clan Tartan Ancient

D.C. Stewart calls this sett, the more recent Davidson, and the basis for the Henderson tartan. It omits the white stripe of earlier setts recorded. The colors are more muted and dull to achieve the more washed out effect of older dyes, which did not retain their original colors, as well as modern ones.

D.W. Stewart calls this the oldest of the Davidson tartans. Smibert and McIan recorded this one with the red and white transposed. The Double and Half Davidson are based on this pattern except the Half omits the white stripe.

D.C. Stewart calls this sett, the more recent Davidson, and the basis for the Henderson tartan. It omits the white stripe of earlier setts recorded. There is a "Half and Double" version with the former being a reduced pattern and the latter, which was a version woven by Wilson's of Bannockburn circa 1847 with the red and white stripes doubled.

Wilson of Bannockburn produced this sett in 1847 and called it the Double Davidson because of the double lines of colors.

This is a very rare tartan, which probably is not available except for special order. The Davidsons or Clan Dhai maintained a constant battle for precedence within Clan Chattan. The Davidsons of Tulloch in Ross-shire are on of the main branches of the Davidson Family and the current Clan Chief is from the branch.
